Folliculitis on the Scalp After Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation is generally a procedure that people undergo to regain their previous hairline and the hair they have lost. However, it can bring a new era to a person’s life and increase self-confidence. As with any medical operation, there may be side effects after hair transplantation. These side effects are actually a reaction of that area because there is more than one intervention in the procedure area.

Post Hair Transplant Acne: Causes, Treatment, and Healing!

Why do acne occur in the operation area after hair transplantation?

Acne that occurs in the transplantation or extraction area after hair transplantation is usually caused by hair follicle inflammation. This is a common temporary complication after hair transplantation and is not a cause for concern. However, if not taken seriously, small pimples can cause larger infections. Therefore, it is very important to follow the post-operative rules. Symptoms of folliculitis include itching, extreme redness, small pimples, pus-filled blisters, tenderness and sometimes pain.

Causes of post-operative acne

  • Micro trauma: Since there are thousands of incisions after the operation, micro trauma may occur. Therefore, the skin around the root may become sensitive and cause inflammation.
  • Bacterial Infection: Post-operative hygiene rules must be followed. In case of non-compliance, infection may occur and these infections may cause folliculitis.
  • Clogging of the sebaceous glands: Clogging of the sebaceous glands in the skin after the operation causes inflammation of the hair follicles.
  • Allergic reaction: The medications used or post-operative care products may cause allergic reactions in some people. This may cause folliculitis.

Healing Process After Hair Transplantation

The recovery process after hair transplantation varies depending on body anatomy, skin sensitivity and rest. After the operation, there may be redness, itching, swelling and acne in the procedure area. Such reactions are normal.

After the first ¾ day, the roots begin to crust and these crusts should not be removed until the 10th day of the operation. In some people, the crusts start to fall off on their own by the 10th day.

After 20-25 days, the transplanted hair begins to fall out slowly. Of course, during this process, redness on the skin continues and small acne appears at the roots of the hair. If these acne increases and becomes like inflammation, you should follow the treatment method recommended by your doctor.

Now, over time, the skin begins to normalize and the redness begins to decrease over time. The transplanted hair starts to grow from the 4th month.

How to Treat Pimples After the Operation?

Treatment for folliculitis after hair transplantation may vary depending on the severity and extent of inflammation. Types of treatment that can be done after scalp folliculitis;

1- Hygiene and Cleanliness: It is important to keep the treated area clean after the operation. Shampoos with mild and antiseptic properties should be used. After the operation, daily washing should be done after wound healing is completed.

2- Antibiotic Creams: For mild cases of skin acne, your doctor may recommend antibiotic creams or lotions applied on the skin. These products can control infection and speed healing.

3- Oral Antibiotics: If the folliculitis occurring in the transplantation or extraction area is more severe and the initial treatment with antibiotic cream is not effective, your doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics. These drugs dry the infection treatment from the inside and prevent it from growing further.

4- Avoiding the use of allergenic products: Shampoo, cream or other products used after the procedure may cause an allergic reaction. If you feel any reaction on your skin after using the product, stop using the product.

5- Doctor's Checkup
